Question

I am four months pregnant with my first baby. Are there any advantages to round cribs vs. the traditional rectangular cribs? I'm trying to decide which kind to get.

Answer

I do not know of any advantages to round cribs. And I would suspect that since they are not as common, finding linens to fit them might be a challenge. I encourage parents to consider safety and function as well as style and color when selecting infant furniture. If you use a new crib, or at least one manufactured since 1974, it will meet the strict safety standards that went into effect that year. Whichever crib you select, make sure the crib side slats are securely fastened and placed no more than 2 3/8 inches apart so your baby won't be able to get caught between them. And the mattress should fit snugly, with a space no larger than two adult fingers between the edge of the mattress and the crib side.
