How to Keep Your Walking Baby Safe on Stairs

Can you believe it? Your baby is walking around like she owns the place. She’s so confident about this new skill and developmental milestone that she already wants to take the stairs — two at a time!

If your baby is new to walking, though, she’s probably not ready for stairs yet. So put the brakes on and take a few precautions. Here’s what you need to know and do.

  • Continue to keep the stairs in your home gated — at the top and bottom — and don’t let your walking baby out of sight. Even though he’s getting good at walking, he still won’t be able to mount stairs for a while.
  • He’s going to push for his independence, but let your baby know that if he wants to use the stairs, he needs to hold Mommy’s or Daddy’s hand.
  • Going down the stairs is harder than going up. You may want to teach your baby how to slide down on his belly, feet first. This is the safest method right now, and you can also treat it as a game he’ll enjoy.

Before you know it, your baby will be skilled enough to walk up and down stairs without help. Just teach him to always hold onto the railing so he stays safe (and stay nearby to supervise). Next up? He’ll be running — cover your eyes!

Get ready, get set, get childproofing! Your baby is about to get way more mobile — rolling, scooting, crawling, and even pulling up to a stand. A good start is to move breakables and cords out of reach. Learn more about childproofing.
