New babies are adorable, and most moms often find themselves spending hours doing new things they’ve never done before — making funny faces to try and get their baby to smile, singing lullaby after lullaby, or perhaps just watching their beautiful baby sleep. The time in a new mom’s day has shifted and cleaning and organizing is not the top priority. Sometimes, the best way to deal with clutter in the house is to shut the door quickly and forget about it. But with a few simple tricks and a few spare hours, you can help organize your house in a whole new way.
Start organizing by going through your house and following the rule of the three R’s: remove, reduce, and rearrange.
Clean out all of your storage spaces and closets. Then, sort everything into four piles: stuff to keep, stuff to donate, stuff to dry-clean or fix, and stuff to throw away. You might even find some clothes you forgot you had, but want to keep!
While your storage spaces and closets are empty, take advantage of time to clean them. Try an all-purpose cleaner on counters, stovetops, and other appliances. This is also a time to put in that clear plastic bin you bought but forgot about putting into the closet.
As you start putting your stuff back into the storage spaces and closets, figure out what to hang where. For example, hang your jackets next to your pants next to your blouses and so on.
You also can figure out what, if any, organizers can help you maintain this new structure. For example, maybe you need an extra shelf for folded sweaters, sweats, T-shirts, or jeans.
You can also determine how many storage bins you need for accessories (including hats and purses) or for stowing winter clothes. Consider other organizers, such as a shoe organizer to keep the floor clean.
The best part about this compartmentalizing approach is that it can be done over a stretch of time, so you don’t have to go about the entire place emptying all the closets at once! And although you’ll still devote most of your precious hours to your precious little one, when your house is organized, your life will seem more organized, too.
