Is laying carpet hazardous?

We are currently renovating the room that will be the baby's nursery. I have heard that it is not good to lay new carpet, that there are some hazards associated with this. Is this true? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have checked with several reputable carpet companies and they assure me that there are no hazards to anyone living with new carpet in their home. Non-toxic chemicals are sometimes used in placing the carpet. These chemicals may have an annoying odor that's not harmful but may last some time. If you can open windows when the carpet is being installed, that will often help get rid of odors.
