Baby Shower Countdown Calendar

With all there is to do in planning a baby shower, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To help break things down into manageable chunks, check out our handy baby shower countdown calendar:

3-6 months before due date

  • Tell the new mom you would like to throw her a baby shower. Ask her if she’d prefer to have it before or after the baby is born, then discuss some tentative dates.

2 months before baby shower

  • Pick a date and time
  • Pick a location and make reservations, if necessary
  • Hire a caterer, if necessary
  • Put together your guest list, including addresses and phone numbers
  • Set your baby shower budget

4-8 weeks before baby shower

  • Plan your menu
  • Decide on a theme; plan decorations and favors
  • Buy or make invitations
  • Buy your gift for the expectant mom
  • Plan activities, games, and prizes
  • Reserve rentals (food service items, tables, chairs, etc.)

3-6 weeks before baby shower

  • Send invitations

1-3 weeks before baby shower

  • Gather tableware and linens
  • Make sure you have enough tables and chairs
  • Order flowers
  • Buy non-perishable food
  • Buy or make decorations
  • Gather materials for games and activities
  • Make sure you have what's necessary for taking pictures and videos (cameras, batteries, phones) lined up

1 week before baby shower

  • Check RSVPs for final headcount
  • Prepare name tags and place cards
  • Confirm reservations and rentals
  • Call expectant mom and remind her of the baby shower!

1-3 days before baby shower

  • Clean your house and yard, if necessary
  • Prepare any dishes that can be made ahead of time

Day before or day of baby shower

  • Buy perishable food (e.g., fresh bread, fruits, vegetables)
  • Prepare food
  • Pick up flowers
  • Set up decorations
  • Set up tables and chairs
  • Have pen and paper ready to record gifts
  • Set out box or large paper bags to store gifts; have trash bag ready for gift wrap
  • Make sure guest bathroom is stocked with fresh hand towels, soap, and toilet paper
  • Do last-minute cleaning

1 hour before baby shower

  • Get dressed for party
  • Receive mother-to-be (who should arrive early so she can be present when guests arrive)
  • Turn on music and light candles
