Heredity plays an important role in disease susceptibility. Learn about your own risks — and your child's — by looking into your family's medical history. Write out a family health history, and give your health care provider a copy to review with you. And be sure to find out which tests and screening procedures you need based on your age and personal risk factors.
These are a few of the most important ones for Mom:
- Manual breast examination
- Pap smear
- Mammogram
Dads should be sure to get regular PSA screenings, and both of you may need lipid screenings, vision exams, anemia checks, and blood pressure monitoring. If you've had colon cancer in your family, add a colonoscopy to the list. You may need other, additional procedures if certain diseases run in your family.
