Caring for the Umbilical Stump

When it comes to taking care of your baby's umbilical stump, keep these tips in mind:

  • Dab the stump with a clean, wet cotton ball or swab at every diaper change.
  • Pay special attention to the area at the base of the cord, nearest to the belly button. Wipe gently but thoroughly to clean out any moist debris that may have collected there.
  • Be sure to allow air to reach the cord stump.
  • If you notice redness or discharge from the stump consult your baby’s health care provider.

I never did anything to treat my daughters stump, I kept it clean around it every change but that's about it. and eventually it fell off on its own and of course I saved it, ha.

Was scared how to clean the cord, now I'm at ease when I do.

This info was very helpful! Was a little nervous it would burn, but baby made no fuss.

Thanks for the advice. I heard you can also use alcohol to help clean and help with the drying process
