Question: I just quit using birth control -- the Depo-Provera shot. How long after the shot wears off can I get pregnant?
Answer: According to the Mayo Clinic, Depo-Provera can delay fertility for ten months or more after it is discontinued. This doesn't mean that it will take
you ten months to get pregnant, but rather that it could possibly take that long. Some women become pregnant after only a few months, so it's really
difficult to predict. You should know, however, that there's nothing wrong with you if it takes up to one year. If you have been trying for a year with no
success, however, it is time to see your health care provider. Also, if you are planning to become pregnant, be sure that you are taking 0.4 mg of folic
acid (a B vitamin) every single day for months before you conceive, as this can prevent many birth defects. This amount of folic acid is contained in many
multivitamins. Read the label of the vitamin bottle or check with your pharmacist.
