Your concern about changes in hair growth or loss during pregnancy is not an unusual one. The increase in pregnancy hormones affects the natural cycle of hair growth. Normally, our individual hairs rotate through a cycle of phases. Some hairs grow, some rest, and some fall out. Ordinarily we shed about 100 hairs a day. During pregnancy these normal phases of hair growth are altered. Many pregnant women find that their hair becomes thicker and grows faster, because more hair is in the resting phase. You, on the other hand, are noticing that more of your hair is in the falling phase. This may change as your pregnancy progresses but may recur for a couple months after the baby is born or after you quit breastfeeding.

To minimize hair loss, shampoo only when necessary. Use a conditioner to reduce the loss of hair that occurs when trying to untangle it. Use a wide-toothed comb, and avoid overusing blow dryers, curling irons, or hot rollers. When brushing your hair, use a gentle brush, such as one made of boar's hair bristles, and don't overdo it. Avoid permanents or hair coloring until the hair loss stops. Ask your stylist to recommend a style that will minimize or mask the temporary hair loss.

Your diet also can affect your hair. Be sure that you're taking your prenatal vitamins, as they'll improve the body and luster of your hair and may alter the loss. And above all, be patient. You will not become bald; your body's hormones will eventually settle back to normal and the hair loss will subside.
