Question
If I have a chest X-rIf I have a chest X-ray, will it harm my unborn baby?
Answer
I don't know why your doctor wants you to have a chest X-ray, but I'm betting it's because your doctor is concerned that you have a problem that requires treatment. We don't routinely order X-rays for pregnant women, but if you need to have an X-ray the technician will give you a protective "blanket" to cover your abdomen and protect the
baby. Since you are already 5 months pregnant, there is little risk to your
baby from one single chest X-ray anyway (the biggest risk is during the first three months when the baby's organs are still forming), but the important thing here is for you to get diagnosed and treated for whatever lung problem your doctor thinks you have. Be sure to tell the X-ray technician that you are pregnant so your abdomen can be covered during the procedure.
