Question

Is it normal for a 3-month-old to have four teeth?

Answer

Teeth eruption is quite variable and may be influenced by heredity. So you might check to see if anyone remembers if any other family members developed teeth early. The average age the first teeth (which are usually the central incisors) come through is 6 to 8 months. But occasionally a tooth or two can be present at birth. These are actually an additional set of teeth, sometimes called milk teeth.

It's a good idea to start cleaning the teeth as soon as they appear. Use a clean soft cloth or a small brush. If any tooth is very loose or fragile, it may need to be pulled.
