"One of my greatest joys is seeing the world through the eyes of young children," explains early-childhood educator Debbie Whitmer. "Every day there are new things to be discovered, ideas to be shared, and experiences to be celebrated. Children and families grow and develop each day. As a teacher for 10 years and a parent-educator, I enjoy helping parents realize the positive aspects of child rearing and enjoy the time they spend with their children."

Debbie Whitmer has an extensive background in the field of early-childhood education. She received her M.A. degree in Human Development with specializations in Leadership in Education and Child Care Administration from Pacific Oaks College. She also has earned her multiple subject teaching credential. She has been the director for a large child care center and has worked in corporate child care, Head Start, and church-related child care centers. She has been a child care consultant and has written and implemented numerous grants benefiting young children and their families. She is active professionally in the NAEYC organization and has presented workshops at local, state, and national conferences.

Currently, Ms. Whitmer is a Head Teacher at Bing Nursery School and a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. In this capacity, she has worked with children, families, Stanford students, fellow teachers, researchers and distinguished visitors from around the world. In addition, Whitmer is also active in parent education. She teaches toddler classes at Parents Place, a local resource center for parents and families. She is active in the local mother's club and is involved in two playgroups. She enjoys spending time with her two children and husband, who is also an educator.

Answer

I love watching 6-month-olds who grab everything in sight and examine everything they can. I think babies like the sounds that paper makes as you crumple and tear it. The problem is that they also put anything they get hold of in their mouths. Paper is not toxic unless it contains printing made from lead or other toxin-based ink, but any kind of paper can be a choking hazard.

If your son plays with paper, be right there to remove it from his mouth. Try to limit him to heavier papers that do not tear easily, so he cannot put small pieces in his mouth. Also, limit his play with wrapping papers, because you never know what the inks may contain, especially if the paper is imported.
