Question
Is my 6-month-old's head-banging habit unusual or harmful?
Answer
This is a very common behavior in infancy and early childhood, occurring in 5 percent to 15 percent of normal children ages 8 months to 4 years. (Your boy is advanced in this behavior!) It's more common in boys and runs in families. This seems to be a pleasurable behavior that releases tension and helps a child settle himself to sleep. Studies of children who head bang show no neurologic damage or injury of any kind from this habit, so don't worry. Keep the head-banging surface soft so he doesn't get any calluses or bruises on his head. Be proud that he's learning ways to get himself to sleep.
