The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends
breastfeeding for at least the first year of your baby's life (or longer, if you're both willing). But with that big first
birthday rapidly approaching, you can start thinking about making the switch to cow's milk. Do wait until she's at least 12 months old, however; introducing cow's milk too early can contribute to allergies and digestive problems.
When you
do start giving your
baby cow's milk, make sure it's whole milk, not reduced-fat or skim. Babies need the fat and fatty acids found in whole milk for brain growth and calories until they're 2. Most babies on formula should switch to cow's milk at 1 year; check with your health care provider to see if you have any special circumstances. Remember: Babies this age should be drinking about 24 ounces of breast milk or formula each day.
