Question
Should I worry about my 1-month-old, who seems to have trouble with gas and bowel movements?
Answer
Bowel movements in babies seem to bring a lot of drama with them, as
infants respond to these sensations that are new to them. If your
infant has stools that are soft rather than pellet-like and if he doesn't seem to be in pain, this process is probably normal. If "hard time" means painful crying, take him to his health care provider. This could be constipation. Bring a recent stool with you in a sealed plastic bag so it can be examined there. Be sure he isn't swallowing a lot of air with feeding by being sure his suction is good on the breast. If you are bottle-feeding, be sure the bottle is held up so he sucks all liquid and not air. Burp him frequently. The most likely possibility is that he is a normal, sensitive lad who is getting used to the ins and outs of life.
