Our son will be 17 months old soon and though he is taking his first steps, he is still unsteady and would prefer to hold our finger and take us around. Should we be allowing this or continually encouraging independent walking? He also does not like eating with utensils, and prefers using his hands. He has been eating like this since he was 9 months old and has not mastered scooping his food. Should we insist that he eat yogurt with a spoon, or just allow him to eat with his hands?

My baby will be a year old in a few weeks and still will not eat by himself. He has absolutely no interest in even trying finger foods. He just throws everything on the floor. I show him how to pick it up and eat it; I stop his hand and say, "Don't throw. We eat the carrots, apples, whatever," but he throws and just cries until I feed him from the spoon. Should he be eating by himself by now? If so, what can I do to encourage / help him? Will my continuing to feed him pose any eating problems down the road?

My 3-year-old son says that he "HATES" people. Everywhere we go it's "I hate this" or "I hate that." I don't understand why he says this. My husband and I never say that. We try to tell him that it's wrong to hate, but he keeps on saying that.

What is your opinion of child harness devices? I get so many ugly looks from people when my 19-month-old wears one, but I think they are a good safety idea.

How do I handle a friend of my son's who can't keep her hands off him? My 18-month-old has an almost 3-year-old friend who is always touching him. He doesn't mind all the time, but she always has her hand in his hair or arms wrapped about his neck. What do I do?
