Question

Why does my 5-month-old fuss and kick when I feed him formula?

Answer

This is a good question to discuss with your baby's medical provider, since it could be so many things. The first step is to establish whether your baby is gaining weight well. If he is not, he may have a serious medical problem that your doctor will definitely want to evaluate thoroughly with a physical exam and perhaps blood tests and special X-rays. If your baby is gaining weight well or is even overweight, he may be suffering from reflux or simply overfeeding. Reflux occurs when the acid stomach contents flush back up into the esophagus and cause irritation. Your baby's fussy feedings and burping may be pain or discomfort from the reflux.

If the medical provider confirms that reflux is the problem, the treatment consists of small, frequent feedings, an increased amount of solid foods, and upright positioning as much as possible. There are also various medications, but fortunately most reflux cases go away on their own by 6 to 8 months of age.
