We’ve compiled a list of the top-rated video baby monitors for 2019 based on a survey of over 6,000 Pampers Parents. Find out which video baby monitors they voted as their favorites.

Why You Might Need a Video Baby Monitor

A video baby monitor offers you a way to see and hear your little one when you’re not in the same room. At a glance, you can check in on your little one when he’s sleeping, or you can keep the volume up so that you can hear when he cries or coughs.

Some video baby monitors are available with Wi-Fi, so they work over your smartphone or tablet. This means a feed of your baby can be viewed from anywhere in the world, so you can check in on your little one while you’re away from home and your partner or babysitter is home watching your little one.

You can read all about what to consider when buying a video baby monitor at the end of the list.

    Pampers-Own Connected Care System

Lumi helps you track your baby’s sleep, diapering habits, feeding routine, and much more, giving you the information you need to track how your baby is growing and developing.

What to Consider When Choosing a Video Baby Monitor

Here are some of the things to consider when buying a video baby monitor:

    Safety

Always install the camera at least three feet from the crib or change table so it’s not within your baby’s reach as any cords can be a choking hazard. For extra safety, cords should be secured in a channel as part of your babyproofing.

Some baby monitors may claim to track vital signs, such as breathing. Unless these devices are registered with the Food and Drug Administration, they can’t be relied upon. Also, no matter what claims a baby monitor manufacturer makes, a baby monitor cannot prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

    Different Video Baby Monitor Technologies

When you’re shopping for a baby monitor, you might see the terms digital, DECT, FHSS analog, or wireless. Let’s define the different baby monitor technologies so you know the differences:

    • Analog. These devices send frequency signals in a straight shot, which means they’re subject to interference from other electronics. This is when you might hear white noise or remnants of someone else’s conversation. Many audio baby monitors use analog technology.
    • Digital. These devices are a step up from analog. The frequency signal is encoded, meaning it’s mixed-up, so it’s almost impossible for anyone else to hear the transmission. You might still run into some interference if you own another electronic device that happens to run on the same frequency. Products labeled with DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology) can help reduce the chance of interference.
    • FHSS technology. There are also video baby monitors that feature FHSS, which stands for Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum. This type of technology avoids interference because the signal bounces among sub-frequencies. On our list, the BabySense and the Philips Avent both use this technology.
    • Wi-Fi. If you choose to buy a baby monitor that works with Wi-Fi, then your baby monitor will rely on your own wireless network to transmit to your smartphone, tablet, or personal computer. You won’t have any interference, but you are dependent on the speed of your network. There may be some privacy concerns, which we discuss in the next section.

    Privacy

Privacy can be a concern with baby monitors that work wirelessly or use Wi-Fi. For example, with wireless baby monitors your device inadvertently picks up interference from another device in your own home or a neighbor’s home. This is more of a problem with analog devices, so it’s a good idea to look for models that feature DECT, which is a more secure technology used by cordless phones.

Another concern may be someone with an RF scanner (a wireless handheld device that uses a radio frequency wireless network) listening in if you own an analog device. Digital models that use DECT technology will remedy this, too.

With video baby monitors that use Wi-Fi, you may worry about hackers accessing your baby monitor. To stop this, set up a strong firewall in your home network. If needed, get in touch with your Internet service provider for help.

Keep in mind that, with some of the Wi-Fi models on this list, you can allow multiple users to monitor your baby. For example, you may want to let the grandparents check in on your baby from time to time. This can be a unique way to keep your family connected but this feature may inadvertently give others more access to what goes on in your home.

The good news is, some models come with a privacy mode so you can switch off this multiple-user feature whenever you’d like.

    Portability

Many video baby monitors are limited by their wireless range, so think about the distance you’d need to go with the parent unit, and consider buying one that has a long range if needed.

Similarly, if you choose a Wi-Fi-enabled video baby monitor, consider the signal strength of your router so that you don’t inadvertently go out of range.

    Extra Features

A classic baby monitor comes in two units, a monitor that you place in your baby’s room (which we refer to as the baby unit) and a receiver for you to carry with you or place near you (which we refer to as the parent unit).

The baby unit may feature extras like

    • a camera that can pan, tilt, and/or zoom
    • a nightlight that may even change colors
    • the ability to play music or lullabies to your baby
    • two-way communication so your baby can hear you talk.

The parent unit may feature extras like

    • an alert for when the batteries run low
    • an alert for when you might go out of range
    • a volume level indicator
    • a vibrating alert so you get quieter notifications.

Wi-Fi baby monitors do not come with a parent unit. Instead, you can use a smart device like your tablet or smartphone to monitor your baby via the product’s app whenever you have Wi-Fi access. As mentioned above, you can also allow multiple users to monitor your baby when they link up using their smart device.

    Expandability

If you’d prefer to have more than one camera to monitor your baby, some video baby monitor models allow you to connect additional cameras. This feature can come in handy if you have multiple small children or if you want to place a camera in different rooms instead of moving the camera each time your baby is in a different room.

Once you find just the right video baby monitor, with the features that most suit your needs and lifestyle, you’ll have the peace of mind knowing that you can monitor your baby when you’re not in the same room.

And, since we’re on the subject of safety, don’t forget to babyproof your home.

    Recall Notice

Before buying a product, always check that it’s approved and hasn’t been recalled on sites like the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
