What is the Chinese Gender Predictor tool?
You may have heard of the Chinese gender predictor chart—an ancient chart foretelling the likelihood of having a boy or girl, depending on the Chinese lunar calendar month and Chinese astrology. According to various legends, the chart was found in a royal tomb near Beijing more than 700 years ago.
Also known as the Chinese gender calendar, the chart is used today as a light-hearted, unscientific way of guessing a baby's sex before birth.
How does the Chinese Gender Predictor work?
This tool relies on the Chinese lunar calendar, which divides the year according to the different phases of the moon and sun. The following two values are gathered and converted into dates on this calendar:
- the age of mom-to-be when the baby is conceived
- the date of the baby's conception
Then, the dates are cross-checked on the chart to come up with the gender prediction.
Ready to try it? Simply enter your information in the table. Once you click "Predict your baby’s gender," you'll get your answer. As easy as that!
How accurate is the Chinese Gender Predictor tool?
Predicting a baby's gender continues to be a popular and enjoyable part of pregnancy, with many theories, formulas, and tricks on how to most accurately determine a baby's sex.
Proponents of this method suggest that the Chinese gender predictor chart is one of the more accurate ways to guess whether you are having a boy or a girl, compared to its gender-predicting competitors, such as the types of pregnancy cravings (sour for boys, sweet for girls). In reality, though, it has only a 50/50 chance of being correct, so don't plan your gender-reveal party just yet!
The Chinese Gender Predictor tool is simply for fun! Always consult your healthcare provider for reliable and accurate medical information.

Can I know for sure what my baby’s sex will be?
If you're looking for a more accurate way to determine your baby's sex, there are medical methods available from your healthcare provider.
A mid-pregnancy ultrasound (sometimes called the gender-reveal scan) at around week 20 of your pregnancy can show your provider the telltale features of your growing and developing baby, used to determine their sex.
Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a simple blood test that looks at small fragments of a baby’s DNA found in the expectant mom’s bloodstream. It is a screening tool that can be done from week 10 of pregnancy and offers helpful information about your baby's health and development before they are born. It can accurately detect your baby's sex, so if you're having this test done and would prefer not to be told if you're having a girl or a boy, let your provider or technician know!
