Potty Training While Traveling

2 min readUpdated July 02, 2026

Key Takeaways

Keep routines familiar. Bring your child’s potty seat and let them practice with it before the trip. Stick to your usual routine as much as possible to help your child feel comfortable using the toilet in unfamiliar places.
Plan ahead. Schedule bathroom breaks every two hours and pack wipes, extra clothes, and a plastic sheet for overnight stays.
Limit liquids during travel, but don’t let your child get dehydrated.
Stay flexible. Expect setbacks, and offer comfort if your child feels anxious or constipated. Accidents and setbacks are a normal part of potty training, especially during travel. Pampers Easy Ups provide up to 100% leakproof protection day and night while helping support your child's growing independence.

General Travel Guidelines

Limit liquids if you are going by car or plane, but don't overcompensate so much that they become dehydrated.
Plan on mandatory pit stops at least every two hours.
Insist on a potty stop before you leave and at all rest stops along the way.
If you're traveling by plane, take your child to the toilet at the airport before you board.
You may want to return to using training pants; if so, be sure they're used just for the trip. Pampers Easy Ups can help provide backup protection while still supporting your child's potty-training progress. Their Easy On, Easy Off design makes them simple for little hands to pull up and down independently.
Be sure to bring wipes, a plastic bag, a full change of clothes, and extra training pants. Pampers Easy Ups feature Easy-Tear Sides that can help make changes quicker and more convenient when accidents happen away from home.
If you're traveling overnight, carry a plastic sheet for the bed, and pack another one as a floor cover if you're using a portable potty.
Watch out for constipation. It's often brought on by a change in diet, and it's a big barrier to staying dry.
If your child refused to go in a strange place and is acting painfully overextended, put them in a warm bath and let them know it is okay to pee in the water, as they inevitably will. Once that happens, they’ll likely realize that it's okay to use the toilet away from home and the problem is unlikely to recur.

Travel and Public Bathrooms

Before you leave home, try to get your child to sit on the toilet. They don't need to produce anything, just to try.
Either carry the potty with you or locate the bathrooms as soon as you arrive at your destination. Training pants with an Easy On, Easy Off design, such as Pampers Easy Ups, can help children practice greater independence when using unfamiliar bathrooms. It's unrealistic to expect a young child to wait when they feel the urge to go.
Model good hygiene by using toilet seat covers or toilet tissue to cover the seat and by washing your hands thoroughly afterward.

Pampers Easy Ups Training Pants

Potty training doesn't stop when you're on the go. Pampers Easy Ups help support your child's independence with a 360° stretchy waistband and Easy On, Easy Off design that feels more like real underwear. Easy-Tear Sides help make changes quick and convenient, while up to 100% leakproof protection helps manage unexpected travel accidents.
