A wonderfully ancient Greek word, George even appears in Plato and Aristophanes. It means 'farmer', but wait, there's more to it than farming! George is one of the bynames for the ancient god Zeus himself, and is god of all crops and of the harvest. More recently, but still a good 2000 years ago, George is the famous folklore saint who beats the dragon. There is a feast of St George, the 23rd April, so little Georges have a great excuse to celebrate more!
George was ranked #235 in the most popular American names of 2015.
