Although as a word this goes back at least two millennia, as a name, Messiah is a recent newcomer. Hebrew in origin, from the word maschiach, it has been used by many traditions to indicate the ‘savior’, although its literal meaning is ‘the anointed one’. A bold and rather different name, it has steadily risen in popularity since its appearance in 2005, though still remaining rare.
