Myles goes all the way back to Ireland and the Gaelic name Maolra, which in itself comes from the earlier Moail-Mhuire, meaning “devoted to Mary”. Used in England regularly from the 16th century, it could well have come to America with the Mayflower and passenger Myles Standish. An alternative explanation for Myles could be an association with Laconian King Myles, going back to Ancient Greece.
